On March 5th, the Chamber Post website posted an article called "The SEIU Learns Something Today." The article is linked here because it points out a couple of the reasons we at the Dayton Metro Library left SEIU.
- First, SEIU spends a lot of money on issues other than representation. That's OK, but job 1 for a union is representation. We were being shortchanged in representation here in Dayton because of the union's focus elsewhere.
- Second, SEIIU can often be anti-democratic. It is to me, antithetical to a labor union to fight against letting people vote. But in Dayton, SEIU's first response to our petition to form an independent union was to try to kill the election.
Anyhow, like I said, I find the blog post interesting. I don't agree with everything the author says, but he did remind me how thankful I am to be in an independent association instead of SEIU.
